I’m getting this app for sure: Pinger.

Although this app like so many others that seem cool for iPhone won’t run in the background while you use another app, check mail, whatever..it sure seems cool. Hopefully Apple is working on simultaneous applications running at the same time.

The app provides a connection layer to your contacts giving you power to IM, email, text, or message through Facebook when they are online. Pinger detects what services the user is logged into as well so you can choose what communication means to use. Kind of neat.

Greg, instead of running apps simultaneously, the iphone offers a “push” application service. The applications run on a remote iphone application server and push the notifications to your iphone. This simulates running an app in the background, while saving battery life and CPU cycles. Pretty ingenious. One issue is that its bandwidth dependent. I suppose that’s less of an issue for the G3 phones. I’m on G1..

Yet another subtlety I was unaware of…interesting. Thanks for sharing.
